Hours/Schedule: 35 hours/week, compressed schedule – work an extra hour every day for a 2 week period, receive every other Friday off, telework option – after 3 months of employment, up to 2x/week can be worked virtually
Rate:  $70K annual salary plus benefits

Job Description:  The Senior Communications Manager handles communications activities and writing for the organization, including press releases, columns and articles, social network management, and scientific news.


Communications (75%)
  • Writes and distributes press releases for journals and for the organization, including several/month for scientific journal content and many in the months leading up to the Annual Meeting
  • Ghost-writes journal and Uptake leadership columns (22 per year); occasionally ghost-writes articles and other documents
  • Leads social media efforts for the society (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube); develops and implements plans for growth and engagement; tracks and reports on metrics, effectiveness, trends
  • Creates and publishes engaging news posts for website
  • Manages media relations for the society, including all proactive and reactive contacts with media
  • Oversees development of videos, including AM plenary video when necessary as well as journal and other videos
  • Develops and manages production of annual report
  • Handles public relations (PR) for Annual and Mid-Winter Meetings, including press releases, reporter registration, press room logistics, and similar activities
  • Manages PR content for the website, including Media audience page, and Member News
  • Updates website as necessary
  • Tracks media coverage as possible
  • Handles other communications responsibilities as the need arises
Newsletter Management/Coordination (25%)
  • Serves as managing editor for newsletters
  • Handles all development and production, including layout in HTML in the website content management system
  • Produces and distributes email blasts for all newsletters
  • Provides information on the society and society activities to members of the press
  • Liaison between organization's leadership/spokespersons and the press

  • Minimum 5-7 years of successfully demonstrated work experience in communications and writing
  • Baccalaureate degree, with postgraduate seminars, courses or workshops in journalism or public relations
  • Experience running and managing social media/network sites
  • Capacity to identify, implement, monitor, and execute work plans for all assigned activities: goals and objectives, work plan and deadline schedules, assignment of responsibilities, reporting and evaluation
  • Proven verbal and writing skills
  • Position-related computer skills, including Microsoft Office 365, Informz, IMIS, and Hootsuite; Higher Logic a plus
  • Attitude, behavior, and demeanor reflecting dedication and service to organization's officers, members, appointed personnel, staff, vendors, and the public
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously
  • A general knowledge of current biological and/or chemical sciences, either through college-level coursework or through work experience
  • Ability to work with staff and manage vendors in a friendly, effective, and efficient manner
