Position: Senior HR Generalist

Company: Manufacturer of instruments and consumables for pharmaceutical research laboratories and QC laboratories. Company also operates as a Contract Research Organization utilizing its laboratory to solve customer problems.  Operations in MA and UK. 


Location:  Headquarters in Billerica, MA.  Some work can be done remotely.
Job Type: Permanent

Hours & Schedule: Full-time.  Must be in office at least 3 days per week.  Option to work remaining hours remotely.
Rate:   $65,000 - $75,000
Job Description: Reports directly to Vice President of Business Operations.  Senior HR Generalist is responsible for working closely with senior management to encourage Human Resources best practices throughout the organization. Protects the interests of employees and the company in accordance with company Human Resources policies and governmental laws and regulations. Responsible for overall administration of the entire Human Resources function including: recruitment, onboarding, benefits, employee relations, performance management, payroll, employment law compliance, maintenance of training documentation in accordance with ISO requirements. Essential functions include:


  • Assist managers with writing job descriptions and onboarding agendas for proposed new hires
  • Source candidates via internet, recruiting agencies, colleges, and other approved sources
  • Screen resumes
  • Conduct telephone screens
  • Prepare offer letters using approved offer letter template
  • Conduct background screens
  • Conduct reference checks


  • Send Welcome Letter to new hires prior to start date
  • Write New Hire Announcements
  • Conduct new hire orientations
  • Track and record new employees’ training progress as outlined in the Onboarding Agenda
  • Perform one-month and three-month check-ins with new employees


  • Enroll new employees in benefits programs
  • Administer benefits changes for existing employees
  • Research and Answer benefits questions
  • Approve monthly benefits invoices
  • Keep the Benefits Summary up to date
  • Administer COBRA compliance
  • Administer workers’ compensation insurance
  • Track Unemployment Insurance claims
  • Track monthly PTO accruals
  • Provide monthly 401(k) breakdown to 401(k) company
  • Prepare annual insurance audits and benefits censuses

Employee Relations

  • Fosters positive employee relations and proactively works with managers to resolve issues
  • Advises on performance and discipline issues
  • Counsels management and employees on policy and procedures
  • Assists with investigations into workplace allegations of harassment, discrimination and retaliation
  • Plans company outings
  • Conducts exit interviews

Performance Management

  • Administer the annual performance evaluation process
  • Assist department managers with measuring past performance and establishing SMART goals


  • Process monthly U.S. payroll
  • Process bi-weekly U.S. payroll
  • Process monthly UK payroll
  • Maintain Payroll Master spreadsheet


  • Stays current with local, state and Federal employment laws, legislation, and trends, and maintains compliance with each
  • Maintains HR records
  • Maintains handbook


  • Determine requirements of ISO training during ISO implementation
  • Maintain training records in accordance with ISO requirements
  • Assist department managers with adhering to training requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in business or human resources
  • Five years of HR Generalist experience in a small to medium-sized, growing company
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Familiarity with ADP Payroll
  • Thorough understanding of employment law
  • Sound decision-making skills
  • Proactive approach
  • Must be able to multi-task and use own initiative to prioritize tasks
  • Must have attention to detail and able to work to strict deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to practice a high level of confidentiality
